Our host: Freeforums.org will be upgrading all their boards to phpBB 3 the end of the year. Sadly we have no say in keeping our v2 board and have to upgrade along with all the other fora either on a date set by freeforums or ourselves. The latter deadline of course being the better choice, we're going to make the upgrade as quick and fluid as possible. Being a different type of forum version some changes will be inevitable with some of the larger changes that will be made are the following:
  • New board features. Slightly different layout to the v2 forum resembling most phpBB 3 boards that can be found on the net.
  • New skin. (don't worry, we'll try and keep it as green as possible :D)
  • Articles section will be moved to a separate forum, possibly the hall of wisdom and can be accessed via the portal or forum index.

Besides these (imposed) changes, it might be nice to clean things up a little and to tweak the site. So in preparation of the upgrade I ask all of you to put forth suggestions that you will like to see in the new board. Be it new features, articles or whatever... let us know what we can do to make the new site better.

The date for the upgrade is as yet undecided, more on that later.

Building a better glade,
The admin/mod team

Offer a forum for non-WE discussion. I know that I would've posted quite a lot more often in the past 2 months if my original Dark Elf thread hadn't been kicked around the way that it was. Of all of the people who use this site, I doubt that there are very many of them who play Wood Elves, and Wood Elves alone.

In one forum you will generate nearly twice as many army lists, tactics discussions and artists displays on this site than the activity currently generated by WE discussion exclusively.

I honour Mach as the Sword of Loren, just as everyone else, but this is not just a fanboi site. It is the quality of posting that matters most. I, for one, am spoiled. The loyal gladers will always be there to keep this site true to its roots (pun acknowledged, if not intended  ), but other loyal members shouldn't be punished for showing interest in other armies.

Sorry for the rant  , but if the opportunity is there to include a new forum or re-arrange the old ones than it would be a shame not to include one like this. I like this site and trust the members here for better quality answers to complicated questions. It shouldn't necessarily matter what army I'm talking about.

and Off - Topic is for movie reviews, , I'm sorry, but it is.

Thanks.

Do you mean something that doesn't already fall into the "Beyond the Forest LEaves" Off topic forum?

As I see it, this is not a general Warhammer "Squeeze in forums for all armies" forum. It is a Wood Elf-cnetric forum, with it's focus on playing with (or against) Wood Elves. I'm not familiar with the Dark Elf thread you mention, but I would not think anything like a Dark Elf "How to play with Dark Elves" sort of articles would fit in the forum except as a off-topic post.

I play other armies - notably Khemri and Beastmen, with occasional forays into NG - and while I've posted occasional army lists for these other armies it was always related back to "How would Wood Elves handle this army" sort of threads. I don't think it's too much to ask for people to somehow tie their questions and articles back to Wood Elves on a Wood Elf forum. If I want a tactics article on how to play using Beastmen, I head to the Herdstone, or for playing using Khemri I'm off to Khemri.co.uk.

Not trying to bust your chops or anything Willowdark, I agree it's nice to be able to discuss other armies at times, but it would seem that there already is a forum for Off-topic/ Non-Wood Elf army discussions in the Off-Topic forum. I can't imagine there being much traffic on a Wood Elf site for people wanting to play with Dark Elves. Do people go to the Dark Elf site looking for tips on how to effectively play with <insert your army here>? somehow I doubt it.

Good hunting
Padraig

Asrai.org offers a single non-wood elf/alternative army forum which does not in any way crowd the forum and is very active and generally appreciated by the members who use it. I'm not trying to impose anything on the glade or show a lack of appreciation for what the glade provides. But I find that I would rather get advice from members of this forum rather than be turned away.

Generally speaking, the questions that I have and the ideas that I have kicked around aren't alien to Wood Elves. Things like deployment strategies, tactical spell casting and troop comparisons are fundamental to Warhammer. However, its seems strange and unfortunate that those topics wouldn't be welcome in a forum of accomplished tacticians simply because of the context by which the questions have been derived.

and lets not pretend like the Glade is so active that there is simply no room for it. I fail to see how offering new fields of discussion, and thereby generating increased activity, could possibly be bad for this site. I'm sure that there are other members here who would love to offer pictures and contribute to discussions for other armies that they might be exited about.

Padraig is only one member of a large administrative/moderator team. It would mean a lot to me to have others contribute to this discussion.

I don't mean to carry my own flag here, but this is my 216th post on this site, and all of them have been meaningful contributions to this site. Well... some of them were haiku  . It seems silly to me that I should be turned away simply because I'm interested in another army. I'm sure that if the forum were available then there would be plenty of other members who would use it. And by the principle of competition, loyal WE users would gear up the other forums as well, it would be very beneficial to the site as a whole. Since the opportunity has come up, and you asked for suggestion, i think it is unfortunate that this idea would be shot down so absolutely.

please, can other members and admin/mods contribute their thoughts on this.

Thank you for posting your suggestion willowdark. Let me start off by saying that we appreciate you taking the time to gather your thoughts on how to make this site better for all fellow gladers. Its input and effort like this that makes this site work and keeps it members sharp and critical. :D

Regarding your suggestion for a non-WE forum. The team debated this issue when you placed your dark elves army list and when it was subsequently moved to the off topic section. There was a discussion about the nature of the debate on the various fora this board has to offer and we agreed that this is a Wood Elves site at its core. Most of the discussion that goes on here is wood elves related, either directly or indirectly: when people request for advice against certain armies and that shall remain so in the future. As you said this site prides itself on creating solid feedback for advice asked, with the focus being on wood elves. Does that mean that all other discussion on different armies is prohibited on this board? Certainly not! In fact we are all aware of the level of the debates here and no post is lacking in content, if anything we encourage discussion on all issues. That being said, this does remain a wood elves site at its core and we have already set up a forum to discuss topics that aren't directly wood elves related: The off-topic section. That forum is more than adequate to discuss dark elves army lists or anything else for that matter. I hope this provides some insight into why we are hesitant about the creation of another forum.

IMPORTANT EDIT: In regard to your note on the haiku's I have to say I disagree, the Haiku thread is one of the most prized contributions to this site! :D

Well met.

I concede, though I wish to claim the right to an official dissenting opinion.... in the form of Haiku. 8)

Already said once
What I've already said twice.
Now I've said it thrice.

Thanks anyway Battle Glade. But you won't get rid of me that easily.
