Following on from my Quartermaster's Armoury post, I took my second list and faced his 'standard' High Elves list, so at least he'd not tailored it against Wood Elves.
Wood Elves:
Highborn Bow of Loren; Arcane Bodkins; Enchanted Shield; Stone ot Crystal Mere; spear; Great Eagle
Alter Noble HoDA; Helm of the Hunt; LA ; Shield; GW
2x Spellsinger L2 2x Dispell Scrolls each
2x 10 Glade Guard
3x 8 Dryads
5 Glade Riders (musician)
6 Wild Riders (std & War Banner)
6 Wild Riders
5 Waywatchers
Great Eagle

High Elves:
Archmage; ethereal robes; Lore of Light - #1,4,5,6 spells
Dragon Mage - Sun Dragon & ring & wand; Lore of Fire - #1,2,6 spells.
BSB
Phoenix Guard x20
Spearmen x 20
White Lions x 10
Archers x 10
RBT x2
Great Eagle

He had 5 dispel dice and about 14 power dice each turn - with the dragon mage getting a free dice each casting!

His BSB & Archmage started in the Spearmen unit. I won first turn and shot 11 of them, but they sadly didn't panic. Getting rid of those two characters would have been a special moment.
My Lord wounded the dragon but the mages never got a successfull spell all game - I rolled 1,2,3 four times :( Anything cast was easily dispelled. The L2 upgrades were a waste for this game - but the 4 scrolls were worth it.

He didn't really cause much damage by shooting - the most satisfying for me was his rolling a 1 to wound when his RBT shot my WR flank (ok, so I forgot the B part of RBT).
His BSB and Archmage moved to the PG unit for protection.
I dispelled his direct damage spells, but let the ItP spell and WS1 spell go.
The Alter noble charged his Archmage, but having never encountered 'ethereal' items before, ddn't know what to hit out at. The Alter duely fled and was chased right across the board as he never rallied.
My break tests and flee rolls were absolutely dire all game - rolling a 6 for a fast cav feigned flight is not acceptable!

I managed to get a single Wild Rider to wipe out an RBT and then help some Dryads wipe out the other.
His Dragon managed to burn one Waywatcher before his rider turned hedgehog. The Dragon stood still and didn't even manage to burn my three remaining characters.
My Lord did well and never even needed to use his Crystal - just as well because he usually fails on the first try.

High Elves got a minor victory - if I had finished off the last 5 spearmen instead of wasting arrows on the dragon, it would have been a draw. However, since it was my first game against High Elves, that's not too bad. I've played nothing but O&G for a long time.

Lessons learned:
HE aren't so scary after all.
ASF only matters in close combat(!).
HE don't have many units, so flanking is actually an option.

My next list will include...
Wardancers
Maybe a Branchwraith/cluster/nettlings instead of Alter to take out Archmage? However, with a champion and BSB, the challenge wouldn't get to the Archmage anyway. Shrikes & Hunter's Talon it is then! But I also want HoDa...

I'd love to take my Sisters of Twighlight, but in a 2000pt list there are not enough hero slots for a BSB, General and scroll caddies.

Oh, crap. Now I must find a hat to eat.

On the ethereal archmage. You don't need a Branchwraith at all. Just send a unit of dryads on the unit, direct as many attacks as you can on the archmage, and call it a day.
Dryads have magic attacks, which makes the ethereal mage unhappy -and probably dead, too-. For 100 points or so.

Between HoDA and Shrikes, I'd get HoDA any day. Shrikes may kill a character if ou can target them a couple of turns, HoDA (combined with normal arrows, even better at short range) kills units. Or dragon mages.

Other things. Your waywatchers pay a LOT for being able to deploy close to your enemy. It doesn't matter if white lions can walk through forests as well as a wood elf, they still need LoS to declare the charge. Deployed on the rigtmost wood, your watchers would have been able to march-interdict the white lions, and threaten a lethal shot on the dragon mage.
Deployed in the leftmost one, you'd have been able to concentrate all our shooting on the spearmen unit in the first turn, with all the pschological impact it would have, and probable be able to threaten one of the RBTs in the early phases.
Try to be more aggressive with your waywatchers next time, and see if they work for you better.

You said you never managed a spell. Which spells did your singers have?

On your next list... I love wardancers. I really do. With watchers, they're my favourite WE unit. This said, I find treekin a safer option when playing high elves. Dancers really need the charge, and the ASF rule is a blow for them.

Better luck next time, and tell us how it goes!

The spellsingers each had Treesinging and then Call of the Hunt and Ariel's Blessing. Great spells, but I had bad rolls or they were dispelled. I'd actually rolled 4&5 and 5&6, but wouldn't have the dice to roll both of those in a turn.
Maybe some bound spells would be good to use up some DD.

I can't remember the last time I took anything other than Scrolls (maybe a power dice once). Maybe I should.

Your magic set up is fine. Against magic heavy armies you will get to dispell their remain in play spells with your power dice, saving dispell dice. Also consider giving the HoDA to a mage if you can't find a place for it among your combat characters. If they shoot it without modifiers they will hit on 3's as opposed to 2's being the best odds possible. This leaves just enough points for Ranu's Hearstone, which is practially the same as a dispell scroll in most cases.
