You need a dremel tool, no doubt about it.
I did a conversion of centaur Wild Riders where I used EG models, cut their legs off and glued them to High Elf Barded steeds. I did the whole thing with a hand saw, it was horrible. Not only was it murder on my hands, but I could only do straight cuts. I've got the parts for 15 more, but I won't even touch them until I've shelled out the money for the dremel.
Most kits come with stone grinder attatchments of various sizes that can be used to shave the pewter down with greater precision, helping you to take their arms off more cleanly, or even whole sections of the model, like the side of the face or the body.
I'd like to see that, whole areas of the head and torsoe shaved down with Dryad heads and torsoes spliced in.
Just make sure you have eye protection.
